📘14 CFR §67.3 – Issue, Renewal, or Denial of Medical Certificates

🚩 Overview

Medical certificates ensure pilots meet specific health standards essential for safe flight operations. FAA regulations detail the criteria and procedures for issuing, renewing, or denying these certificates.

Key Requirements and Procedures

🩺 1. Eligibility and Application

  • Medical certificates (First, Second, and Third Class) are issued upon meeting specific medical standards detailed in Part 67.

  • Pilots must apply through an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

📅 2. Renewal of Medical Certificates

  • Pilots must renew medical certificates periodically:

    • First-Class Medical: Every 12 months (under age 40), every 6 months (age 40 and older).

    • Second-Class Medical: Every 12 months regardless of age.

    • Third-Class Medical: Every 60 months (under age 40), every 24 months (age 40 and older).

⚠️ 3. Denial of Medical Certificates

  • Certificates may be denied if the applicant does not meet established medical standards.

  • Applicants denied medical certification have the right to appeal or request reconsideration, including Special Issuance (see §67.401).

📑 4. Reporting and Documentation

  • All medical conditions and histories must be accurately and fully disclosed on FAA Form 8500-8.

  • Providing false or intentionally misleading information can result in severe penalties.

🛩️ Example Scenario

You're applying for your First-Class medical certificate renewal. You visit your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), complete FAA Form 8500-8 truthfully, and pass your medical exam. The AME then issues or renews your medical certificate based on FAA medical standards. If denied, you can pursue reconsideration or special issuance.
