📘14 CFR §91.303 – Aerobatic Flight

🚩 Overview

Aerobatic flight maneuvers involve intentional abrupt changes in aircraft attitude or abnormal flight attitudes. FAA regulations clearly define areas and conditions under which aerobatic flight is prohibited to maintain safety for participants and bystanders.

Key Operational Requirements

🎢 1. Definition of Aerobatic Flight

Aerobatic flight involves intentional maneuvers such as:

  • Abrupt changes in altitude or aircraft attitude.

  • Intentional abnormal attitudes or unusual acceleration not required for normal flight.

🚫 2. Prohibited Areas and Conditions

Aerobatic flight is not permitted:

  • Over congested areas, towns, or open-air assemblies of people.

  • Within controlled airspace designated for an airport (Class B, C, D, or E surface area).

  • Within 4 nautical miles of the centerline of a federal airway.

  • Below 1,500 feet above ground level (AGL).

  • When visibility is less than 3 statute miles.

🚨 3. Waivers and Exceptions

  • Pilots wishing to perform aerobatics in restricted areas must apply for and receive a waiver from the FAA.

🛩️ Example Scenario

You’re planning to practice aerobatic maneuvers. Before doing so, verify your practice area is clear of prohibited airspace, meets visibility minimums (3 SM), and is at least 1,500 ft AGL. Ensure no federal airways or congested areas are nearby. If in doubt or unable to meet these criteria, apply for an FAA aerobatic waiver.

📌 CFI Pro Tips

  • Planning and Compliance: Teach students to thoroughly review airspace charts and FAA regulations before conducting aerobatic flights, stressing the importance of compliance.

  • Safety First: Reinforce altitude discipline, situational awareness, and proper procedures when performing aerobatics to ensure safety.
